One of the tools I love to use in working with folks as a Life Transitions Coach is the Wellness Inventory.  https://www.bodymindspirit.com. As a certified coach to use this, I have found it a great springboard for exploring quality of life and well-being.

In the next months, I would like to explore from a personal perspective, and a coaching perspective, what difference these dimensions make in my own life. The first one is Self Love: Self Responsibility. I find this one to be foundational for all other dimensions of my life. This article is mostly focused on the question, “What does “Self Love” look like? It is directly connected with Self Responsibility.

An important part of being a professional caregiver is to stay in tuned with one’s own energy level. When I help others, I, as an introvert, can quickly run out of energy. I get mentally, emotionally, and even physically, tired. My favorite way to recharge is to take a run or walk into natural settings.

Two weeks ago I got the opportunity to spend some time with a friend and her sister outside of Rocky Mountain National Park. Anyone knowing me well knows that the National Parks, especially in the western part of the US, are on my “bucket list” to visit and enjoy. Being in Colorado for over a week  (much of that time with youth at a National Youth Conference), and then in RMNP, took me completely away from my home and my mental focus of daily work and activities. I felt like I was away a long time, even though it was just 10 days. I realized when I returned home how thankful I was to be away in God’s natural beauty. I felt rejuvenated.

We all need that time to renew and re-energize!! I often get my renewal from being out in nature. I read an article this morning on research that stated, “we show that four days of immersion in nature, and the corresponding disconnection from multi-media and technology, increases performance on a creativity, problem-solving task by a full 50% in a group of naive hikers.” This validated what I already felt and knew.

That may not be your “thing” to rejuvenate and re-energize. We all need our own way of re-creating ourselves in a regular and intentional way. It may be music, or art, or museums, or baking, or…whatever offers new life and self love to you. Self Love and care is not only NOT selfish, but necessary. Think about this…NO ONE knows what you feel, think and need in any given moment like you do. Others may have opinions, and even offer good input and advice. But, ultimately, you need to make your own best decision! You do not need to be validated by someone else about how you feel or need!

What does self care, self love, self responsibility look like for you today. It may be taking responsibility for something you said or did, or responsibility for something you need to do to build yourself up. It involves both Self Love and Self Responsibility to find a healthy balance to renew energy and take care of being your best self.
